All Hallows Write

I did the All Hallows Write tag from Sam Kassé for Bloodrites. If you want to do it too, you are hereby tagged.

The Rules
  • Provide a BRIEF description of your novel before starting.
  • Don’t use the same character for more than 3 answers.

The Questions
  1. It’s Halloween night! What is your protagonist dressed up as?
  2. Who in your cast refuses to dress up and shows up at the Halloween party without a costume?
  3. Which character wears the most outrageous costume, and what would it be?
  4. On Halloween, werewolves, vampires, and zombies are on the prowl. Which of your characters gets caught in their clutches, and which creature do they subsequently turn into?
  5. Who wins the contest for best costume?
  6. Who hands out toothbrushes to the trick and treaters?
  7. Which two of your characters decide to pair up and do an angel/devil costume together?
  8. Someone is too scared to even attend the Halloween party. Who is it?
  9. Who overdoses on Halloween candy and ends up sick?
  10. Which character is most likely to place a curse/hex on someone and who would they curse?

Character design

You might know the character profiles sheet from my commissions. Here, you can find all finished character profiles I made. Spoiler warning (obviously)

What colour are Roses?
Gwenog Lewis

I also made little cast sheets and I will be uploading them here once I have one full cast complete. Feel free to email me, if you have read Mermaid Quay and have a suggestion for who could play Hannibal Meier.

As you might know, I write my novels in Overleaf, using a programming called LaTeX. Here, I will share some of the code, I use to make certain sections of my books. Big thanks to my publisher Robin Marshall, who helped develop a lot of the code (especially the copyright page and the layout) and to writeLaTeX who is named as the author of the template that I based my own template on. I have a special template that I use with Robin Marshall which I won't share for obvious reasons. Also, I feel like you should personalise your template to have your own kinda layout, so here is my main.tex

These are to design the document.
The page setup is done manually
\usepackage[paperwidth=10.5cm,paperheight=14.85cm,bindingoffset=5.4mm, left=13mm, right=13mm, top=39pt, bottom=56pt,footskip=5mm]{geometry}
This is the line setup

We all know the struggle with setting up *** between paragraphs. I found a way but sadly I can't remember who wrote it.
\fancybreak{* * *}%

Robin Marshall taught me how to define some tasteful colours.

Don't forget to include the hyperlink package and set colours for hyperlinks.

Defining the title, the title page and the author worked like this
\small \textit{series}}
\author{Alice de Sampaio Kalkuhl}

Chapter title manipulation worked like this.
\renewcommand*\thechapter{\ifnum\value{chapter}<10 0\fi\arabic{chapter}}

These are some typographical settings for the body text.

I also set some personalised headers.
  \headsep = 0.16in
  \makeevenhead{mainmatterstyle}{}{\textsf{\small\scshape\ Title}}{}
  \makeoddhead{mainmatterstyle}{}{\textsf{\small\scshape\ series or Alice de Sampaio Kalkuhl}}{}
  \createmark{chapter}{left}{nonumber}{\@chapapp\ }{.\ }}

The table of contents customisation took me some time but I ended up figuring it out with help of Robin Marshall.
\renewcommand\contentsname{\normalfont\scshape Title}
\renewcommand{\printtoctitle}[1]{\LARGE Title}

Here begins the book.

The first thing is a title page.

Instead of putting everything in the main.tex, I made little .tex that have the different sections. The preamble.tex includes copyright, dedication and table of contents.

The mainmatter is where things that go in the table of contents go. The * is there so they don't get numbered.

The backmatter includes the acknowledgements, an about the author, pages about my other novels and a link to my newsletter.\

And that's it.
